Alex Chiu dedicated much of his life to serving the community. He was Ward 8 Councillor for 33 years and was elected ten times consecutively. Alex had a deep passion for helping the people of his ward, the City of Markham, and especially those who were not as fortunate. His commitment to giving back was constant, and over the years he organized more than 20 golf tournaments that raised funds for every hospital in York Region, the YMCA, local charities, and relief efforts for international disasters.
This tournament continues that spirit of community and generosity. It is also deeply personal. Alex and Alicia’s son, Christopher, became sick with ALS at the age of 32.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is the most common form of motor neuron disease. ALS is fatal, with no cure and limited treatment options. Most people live two to five years after diagnosis.
Proceeds from the Alex Chiu Memorial Golf Tournament support the Christopher Chiu Fellowship for ALS research at the University of Toronto. This fellowship strengthens the work of Canada’s largest and most internationally published ALS research lab, where scientists are focused on understanding the disease, identifying new treatment targets, and moving discoveries closer to meaningful therapies.
Through the fellowship, ALS Double Play is helping fund post doctoral ALS researchers whose work expands the lab’s capacity and accelerates progress. We are currently funding Dr. Paul McKeever, our third post doctoral ALS researcher.
Your support also helps ALS Double Play provide mental health support to individuals and families impacted by ALS. Living with ALS affects every part of life, and emotional support can be just as important as practical care. By supporting this tournament, you are helping families access support, connection, and care during an incredibly difficult journey.
Together, we honour Alex’s legacy by advancing research and standing beside families with compassion and hope.
